Babyboy's M - Alfa Romeo Empty Babyboy's M - Alfa Romeo

Post by babyboy Mon 27 May 2013 - 23:27

Here's my Mini. After 3 days of finding time.... here's what I got with the help from my daughter in sorting the screws. Straight forward build from the box with the instruction. Better than Axial in term of bag A B C where you find all things needed to build that particular part. Still having issue from Axial QC on parts that dun fit on my 3rd Kit. Sad

Upgrades with ball bearing and shocks.

Manage to strip 4 screws up to this point... Smile Need help from here onwards. The rear is set to toe in and the front toe out... the front toe out is so much? I followed the instruction on the spacing required and the toe out is soo much from my point of view. Do I really need so much toe out?

Noob question. The sponge provided need to trim the length and squeeze in the tyre? Do I need to trim the width? Need to check before I actually cut it to ensure that I'm doing it correctly...

Great to see you found some time building it!

The toe out in the front seems a bit excessive, but maybe the camera distortion makes it worse than it is, plus you have no battery in the car which will also make a difference when there is weight on the front axle.
From the photos it looks like the gap between the steering link ball ends may be too small, making the links too short hence too much toe-out, There should be 2mm gap between the adjuster pieces; yours looks like closer to 1.5mm (though hard to see on the photo). Refer to the manual step 15.

The sponges are already the correct size, no need to trim. Push them gently into tires and they will fit nicely after a bit of careful massaging. Make sure the ends meet up nicely. Then put the tires on the rims.

What shocks are you using? The M-06 needs very stiff springs in the back as there is a lot of weight in the back. It looks yours has the same springs front and rear, which could mean that either the rear is too soft and will bottom out on the slightest bump, or the front will be too hard. The kit comes with really hard golden color springs, but unfortunately they don't fit on aftermarket shocks.
The shocks look similar to the Yeah Racing ones I have. Mine came with red (soft), yellow (medium) and blue (hard) springs. I am using red on the front, and blue on the back. I also changed to a 600 weight shock oil with a one-hole piston for the rear as it was too bouncy (stock was 2-hole piston with 400 oil, yellow in color as supplied in the Tamiya kit). And I moved the top mounting to the center hole instead of the outer most. I haven't had a chance to drive after the changes so I am not sure how well it is tuned now, but with yellow springs, 2 hole piston and standard 400 oil it bottomed out a lot and bounced around.

Regarding stripped screws: you may have the wrong type of cross-head driver. I use a "PH-2" that fits snug and never stripped a screw.

One more thing: many of us discovered that the supplied servo saver is garbage. Unusable. It has so much slop that every time the car goes over a bump the steering goes out of trim. The cure is to use the Tamiya 51000 high torque servo saver. Do not run without servo saver, because if you have a crash then the plastic steering parts will bend (don't ask how I known Very Happy )

Yes the camera makes it looks very excessive. The gap is as shown in the manual. So this is normal after battery is mounted. Thanks

Yes, its the Yeah Racing shocks. Good that you pointed out. Will change to the red spring for the back. Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up.
