Indeed just locking either front or rear is not enough for any serious trailing. With both diffs locked is is passable.
But all the gears are plastic so locking the diffs provides a lot of stress on to them. Expect them to wear rather quickly if you use the vehicle a lot.
The kit comes with one set of lockers for one diff (two triangle-shaped pieces on the G sprue), the second diff can be locked by wedging the spider gears. See http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/tamiya-xc-cc01/182426-blackfoots-cc01-project-some-simple-diy-mods.html

As Master Liew said you will need a high turn motor (45T, 55T). The stock 27T silver can makes it go quick, but at the expense that it has very little torque at the low speeds required for trailing.

I don't have a recommendation on tires, other than that the stock are way too hard. When getting other tires you need to pay attention to the outer diameter -- the CC01 tires are 1.9" but have a small outside diameter.
People have fit larger tires, but that requires cutting the body shell and other mods.

Junfac and AsiaTees are good sources for reasonably priced parts of good quality.

Ensure you upgrade the wheel-hex to metal ones. I recommend the original Tamiya one's "Pin Type Wheel Adapter #53056)". Also the steering should be upgraded out of the box. I had success with GPM parts, see my blog at http://laneboysrc.blogspot.sg/2012/12/tamiya-cc-01-steering-repair-using-gpm.html

Build thread with photos please!
