[PHOTOS] Fantastic Four Empty [PHOTOS] Fantastic Four

Post by laneboysrc Sat 19 Apr 2014 - 15:06

In the last ten days we have managed to finish off four cars that are lurking in our home since quite a while. Please let me share some photos:

Lets start with the newest first. Tamiya TT02 with La Ferrari body.

At this time the TT02 received only few upgrades: We are using bearings all around, a Yeah Racing steering wiper for reduced slop (although it isn't as good as it could be because the bearings in the kit have too much play).

The ESC is a less-than-30-bucks-US 60A sensored ESC from HobbyKing. It seems to be a Hobby Wing Xerun OEM because the Hobby Wing programming card works with it. The motor is a Turnigy 8.5T.

Next is another Ferrari: "360 Stradale" on a TL01 chassis. This is a new build of a kit that is already out of productions since many years.

Bro Boo was so kind to make the custom decals for me, turning the bland 360 body into a gorgeous car.

One of the main features of the Ferrari 360 is that you can see the engine through a large window of the rear. Tamiya did not replicate this. So we made our own.

We took photos, which you can find plenty on the Internet, scaled them to size, had them print out as photo, and built a small "box" that sits under the window. Big gain in looks for an afternoon's work!

The chassis received quite a few upgrades because they are very cheap -- old stock being sold off. The electronics come from the TT02 kit.

Around 15 years old is the next car: a TA03F we got from Japan for a very fair price. The body is new. It is not one that was ever sold with the TA03F, but those are very rare unfortunately.

This turned out the best body I ever made. Almost show-room quality.

The chassis is as we got it. We cleaned it a bit, changed to a Deans connector, but that's it. It contains quite a few upgrades and runs well.

The body got the LANE Boys RC customary light installation. 14 LEDs in total.

The oldest kid on the block is almost 20 years old: Tamiya FF01 with Opel Vectra JTCC body.

Not exactly a looker, so I kept it far away Smile

[PHOTOS] Fantastic Four 13932123043_69d373de10
The body can be built for two different drivers, Reid and Bell. The original body that came with the car was for "Reid", so we decided to build the new body with "Bell" decals.

Even decals for the rims are provided!

[PHOTOS] Fantastic Four 13908956242_07314cd7b9

Old and new body together. Beside the number there are only few differences between the cars, for example the windshield sun block is blue instead of green, and the blue/purple "Gyraless" sponsor stickers are missing on the Bell car.

The new body is missing the Michelin decals. Presumably Tamiya does not have the rights to distribute them anymore. Shame on you, Michelin Sad

The chassis was well used but in good condition. We stripped it completely down, cleaned it and put it back together. We had to replace a knuckle hub and the steering wipers because they had cracked -- which is quite usual for cars of that vintage.

We also changed all bushings for bearings and used a high-torque servo saver because the original one adds a lot of play to the steering. Also the servo mount needed replacement as the screws were loose due to wear and tear.

[PHOTOS] Fantastic Four 13932121403_62ec9a0724

The chassis is a derivate of the TA01. With the motor all the way to the front the car is extremely front heavy.
The servo came with the car, it is a classic Futaba FP-S148. The brushed ESC is from HobbyKing. Those are excellent value for money.

Thanks for watching. For more photos just click on any of the photos and browse our Flickr gallery.

If you had kept the body on the chassis. .. no one will notice that it was a 1/10 rc car. Beautiful.
