Duratrax Onyx200 charger help Empty Duratrax Onyx200 charger help

Post by dantevil Tue 20 Mar 2012 - 10:09

Good Day everyone

Need some help here.
Anyone using the Duratrax Onyx200 charger?

Can i ask which transformer should i get?
i got myself the 220V to 110V max 60watt transformer ...but i can't seems to charge my Onxy5000 nimh battery.

According to the manual and indicator (i encounter 5 lights Blinking) ...it says the voltage on the input is out of the 11-15V range.

Means what? i have to get another type of transformer for the charger?
Anyone can enlighten me?
I am noob at electrical stuff Razz

Thank you

hi,
the transformer is for devices that use 110V AC mains... for chargers, for my case, it requires 12V DC, for your case, if you charger says input voltage of 11-15V range, you should get a POWER SUPPLY that supplies within this 11-15V DC voltage...

if you had manged to plug in the 110V AC to your charger input... then... Shocked Shocked pale pale

Duratrax Onyx200 charger help Dtxp4200-main
The Duratrax onyx 200 is a AC/DC charger.
There is dual input supply for this charger. 110v AC and 12v DC.
The red and black wires with crocodile clips are for 12vDC input.
You can also hoot a 220vAC to 12vDC 8A power supply for the 12vDC input.

You are using a under power step down transformer for your charger 110v input.
Your 60watt stepdown transformer can only produce about 0.5 amperes for the input.
Your charger wouldn't be able to produce enuff power to charge your battery.

So you should have hoot a 1000watt stepdown 220-110v transformer for your charger 110v input supply. That is about 9 A for the input. Oversize transformer will be cooler and more lasting. Or at least a 500watt stepdown transformer about 4.5amps also can.

Something like this:

Bro, the 1st day you forgot to switch to 220v may already damage your Duratrax charger.
As you said there are 5 LEDs blinking, from the instruction manual states that the input voltage 11-15V is out of range.
Seems like you have connect 110v to the 12VDC input!!
Can you please post a picture of your connection . Everything connected so that we can see wats the problem.

Oh no... seems like i am punk'ed!

Actually the charger now still can identify that my batteries is the 6 cell one. Connect the power, all 5 LEDS will blink 3 seconds and then only the 6 cell one will light up. Then after that all 5 LEDs will blink again with the beep sounds non stop.

Even before day 1, i connect just the battery to the charger, all 5 LEDs will blink nonstop. Today i tried, same thing, all 5 LEDs will blink ( this is without connecting the power supply at all). Just to test if the charger is ok or the battery is ok. I tried 2 batteries by the way (also with both power on and without, both give me same results).

ok here is my connection, hope i did it right

Duratrax Onyx200 charger help Power-10

And here's the manual instruction

Duratrax Onyx200 charger help Diagra10

OR issit really not enough power to charge since u mentioned this in your previous post?

"You are using a under power step down transformer for your charger 110v input.

60w should be fine... Cos the wattage is in AC....

The charger should be charging at 5A max at less than 12V... So around 60W, but good to get bigger transformer so that it can operated cooler....

Maybe bring it down to one of our meets where theres powerpoint, and let the bros try for you....

Post by RTECH Thu 22 Mar 2012 - 19:26

dantevil, your connection is correct. You may try the suggestion given by Teck , connect the red and black crocodile clip to the car 12V DC battery to test if the charger is working properly.
If it works , then focus on the AC 110V input . Wat i am afraid that these "so-called" 60W or 100W transformer may not actually provide that kind of power. OR sometimes the output may produce more than 110v to the charger. Even if it provide the 100W power, it is still not enuff for the AC input. The starting up surge current is higher compare to charging current.
So that is the reason , why i ask you to get a much more bigger transformer like 500W to 1000W just to provide that extra power to startup the charger.
Bigger transformer will not harm your charger.

Another thing is , it is advicable to connect the 110v input 1st to power up your charger, let the charger computer bootup 1st, then you connect the battery pack to your charger.

Duratrax Onyx200 charger help Dtxp4190-logo-small
AC/DC Peak Charger

Offers AC/DC versatility and worry-free peak detection for NiCds and NiMH batteries at an incredibly low price!

  • 1, 2, or 4 amps from DC input
  • 1 or 2A from AC input
  • Charges 4-8 cell packs
  • Very small and lightweight

Just did a search on the duratrax website , found that the onyx100 charger requires 1 or 2A from AC input that is equvilant to 110W to 220W of AC power requires using the formula Power = current X voltage.
220W = 2A X 110VAC.
The onyx200 charger doesn't states the require AC input current. Since it is able to charge up to 5 amps DC output, I would suggest you use a 500W transformer.

Yeah, rtech is right, if it states 2A ac input, you would need a much higher power transformer...
Depends on the price... Might want to consider getting a DC power supply instead?

Post by dantevil Sat 24 Mar 2012 - 0:24

ok today 5th day already. Finally it managed to charge after i connect to the car DC 12V...everything works perfectly.

But not working when i use the AC power...HAizz...

Tomorrow i shall hunt for the 500w transformer at Sim Lim and hope that it wont cost me a bomb. The 300W i check today cost about $56 at a DIY retails shop but it failed to make my charger works.

OR maybe like Boolean said to get DC power... OR maybe i just get a cheap charger when i pay a visit to Tamiya tomorrow.

Its been almost a week.. I WANNA PLAY MY CAR!!! LOL...

ok Day 5...i brought the charger everything to Sim Lim Tower to test.

Using a transformer for 400W also cannot work. The guy was shocked and said how can this be. We wanted to try the 500W but when i looked at the size of the converter.... Evil or Very Mad

So i told him, to test using the DC 12V power and it works. So he cut open the clip and connect to a connected and then to the Replacement AC Adapter. All for $35 bucks...hope i never kenna con this time.

It works, and within an hour, i finally got full charged on my 5000mah battery! YEah! Twisted Evil

Oh i see, this type of transformer using brute force to step down is use during the time when the police wear
shorts.
Your power supply is also modern technology. If use the police wear shorts type of technology, your power supply also same size as the transformer u post above.
