Advice for a n00b Empty Advice for a n00b

Post by richie303 Thu 5 Apr 2012 - 11:12

Hi All,

I am new to the Crawler concept, I have 1/10 EP drifters and regularly run those, I also used to own 1/8 Nitro Truggies and Buggys but they are gone now (sadly). I have been looking at and really want to get into crawling, I currently want to just buy something that will get me started and also be fairly versatile but I am not sure which one to get.

Just when I thought I'd got it down to a few I checked some more sites and have seen tons of others

Anyway, I like the look of the Axail SCX10, Kyosho Rock Force, Gmade R1 and Tamiya CC01.

I like the idea of the 4x4 style shells, like a D90 or a Jeep etc, but, I want to have something which will tackle anything I throw it at.

With all this in mind, I am thinking about going for an R1, has anyone got one? What are the challenges? It seems like a very versatile and has good looks.

Some total n00b help is definitely required here, I have radio gear, servos, esc, batteries etc would need a high turn motor as my spares are all fairly low turn from before I went brushless then I think that would be me!

Also, in regards to availability of parts, it seems from looking at the forum so far that everyone orders from the internet? Or is there better part availability for a particular make/model.

Cheers

There are 2 main types of catergories for crawler.
1) Rock crawler (Design for crawling rocks, mostly not scale looking)
2) Trail crawler (Design for trailing muds, small rocks, etc., scale looks)

Gmade R1 and rockforce is more of a rock crawler. But not really good at rock crawling.

SCX10 is a trail crawler. Scale chassis and shell design.

CC01 is a shelf queen.

Most of our meeting are more on trail crawling where we takes videos and pictures to make it look as scale as possible.

There is rock crawling meet, but due to the shortage and type of rocks in singapore. We not often organise rock crawling.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I'll probably go for the SCX10 to start with, I can see me getting into the rock crawling too though so may want to get something else later on, it depends on what the wife allows me to buy Wink

Edit: Where is a good place to buy in from? Tower Hobbies? Or is there somewhere better?

I've been looking at the AX10 Ridgecrest, there's not a lot on the web about it at the moment, it's fairly new, but it seems to be the new model of the AX-10.

Thoughts?

Cheers

The bodyshell is hideous, I think I'll stick with the SCX honcho for now Smile

Right, time to spend some cash! Any recommended mods for straight out of the box?
