RC System/servos recommendations for crawling (Futaba?) Empty RC System/servos recommendations for crawling (Futaba?)

Hi all and crawler gurus,

I'm planning to get the Tamiya's CR01 (I know is somewhat overpriced). Anyway I would like to get some pointers/ideas on what I should go for in the R/C system department. The only 'brand' I have some contact with is Futaba - which I used for the venerable Wild Willy 2. But the R/C set I've gotten for it came with necessary servos (it was a simple no frills 2 channel model) and its ESC was rather straightforward to get. It seemed that for crawling, it's quite a DIY thing with 'mix and match' of R/C systems, servos/esc. Say if I want to have a setup that provides a wide range of possibilities for crawling, what should I be looking at? What sort of RC systems and servos/esc? And roughly what are the price ranges - say if I want to stick to Futaba. If I put aside 1k for the crawler and r/c stuffs...is that sufficient? Of course I don't mean that I must hit 1k, I'm definitely open to lower cost solutions though (in the R/C system and related stuffs).

Hi firstly take a look at Axial crawlers for example Scx10 Honcho or Dingo. You won't go wrong with this. If you are really keen in the CR01, then the electronics you can get at affordable price are towerpro 996/995 servos giving out about 9kg torque. Esc can get from eBay. Just search for 300A or 240A esc. The standard 2.4ghz radio system from Hobbyking is very affordable and same goes for lipo batts. With your 1k budget, I think you can get 2 vehicles with similar setups. Just do a search on this forum for expert advice on servos and escs.

With 1k budget, might want to get a rcmodelex chassis kit for the hilux, wrangler or defender instead! Smile

Thanks for the suggestions. Appreciated. Oh well the 1k budget was on the wild side but I know the CR01 is pretty much twice the price of those from Axial. And some of the higher end R/C system does cost a bit. Anyway, I'll check out the sites and the servos.

When you get your radio set, it may be worth while to spend a bit more for a 3 or even 4 channels one, as later, you may want to add a winch or control the light or mabe you will get a truck with 3 speed gearbox, so a 3-4 channel is worth while they are not to much more.

A futaba is good brand, 3pl is only a tad more than 2pl, 4pl cost a fair bit more, but it a lot more capable.

I had a CR01 Unimog before, not overly capable but but for trial run, they are good. If you guys comp in sg, then scx10 has definite advantage

Btw do you guys usually get your stuffs from overseas? How about local shops - are the prices inflated or they are largely ok?

Oh I see. What are the good online sites that you usually order from? Earlier there was a mention on "HobbyKing" - do you get your stuffs from there too? How are the shipping charges - wouldn't it be hefty lets say if you order the kit/chassis?

which site to buy depends on what you are buying...

Price plus shipping are usually cheaper than getting them locally...

HobbyKing.com is great for electronics, batteries, tools and materials. Shipping depends on weight: EMS (arrives usually 4-5 days after order) is USD 18 for 1kg, USD 24 for 2kg.
For vehicles they have only their house brands; have not seen much interesting there for trailing/crawling.

For kits they will often come from US. Shipping is very expensive indeed (USD 60-70 for slow 14 day shipping), but what can you do. Some sites in the US have "discount codes" (e.g. TowerHobbies) -- that can bring cost down quite a bit! Google is your friend...

About local shops: here is a incomplete list I've collected:

http://swanmodelandtrading.blogspot.com/ - Has Axial stuff some times
http://rotor.com.sg/ - Thunder Tiger, Hitec servos, lots of accessories and parts
http://www.stargek.blogspot.com/ - The Tamiya temple in Singapore
http://www.toykar.com/ - Has a bit of ProLine stuff
http://www.taising.com/eng/ - HPI stuff, lot of brushless electronics and large replacement parts and tool assortment.
http://www.jethobby.com.sg/ - Mostly airplanes and boats, has good and cheap Mumeisha to paint lexan bodies, cheap LED kits
http://www.racecraftrc.com/site/default.aspx - Mostly racing stuff, but some special paint accessories like liquid masking and tools
http://www.myrcstore.com/index.php - called NTC Hobbies; has Traxxas stuff and good selection of building materials, including styrene rods, tubes, etc. In the same building are a few other model shops, mostly planes, multi-rotor and helis.
http://www.autodriftrc.com/ - Drifting stuff; sells waterproof Fitec servos
http://www.sgstreetdrift.com/ - Drifting stuff, had a Wraith kit on sale a while ago
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Taroda-Racing/283082228393264 - Tiny shop, has Tamiya and other stuff, has waterproof Fitec servos. Does car repair
