rover - land rover IIa 88/109 Empty land rover IIa 88/109

Post by wyetuck88 Sat 18 Jan 2014 - 13:53

Having bought a gmade sawback recently,  i decided to make a metal land rover series IIa 88 and 109.

body will be made in two types of material.
aluminum and ss. (I seems to have a tendency of making super heavy stuff lol.)

The sawback was a great kit, there are a couple of flaws but there`s nothing a little drill and a file cant fix.
Heres a list of things that will be done.

using axial gearbox as a transfer gear, topcad alu wheels, metal coupling
replace all Philip head screws with allen key button type ss screws
side mount the servo motor
moving the engine to the front
adding a two speed gearbox
cutting the frame to increase wheelbase
axle over leaf spring (the original jeep and LR88/109 had axle over leaf too)

pictures will come soon,
thats all for now, thanks for reading!

Some updates,I changed to axles over spring,as a result about 20mm of ground clearance are lost over at mid section, both Approach angle and departure angle have to be reduced. The exposed U bolts could caught on weeds and stuff, so I will need to sort that out later.

I added a 2 speed gearbox to the motor, (quite a bit of modification is needed) and squeeze in motor and the steering servo together.
The motor is 550 if you are wondering whats wrong. I need a rebuild-able 540 motor, anyone wants to sell? 35t seems ideal.

Added axial "transfer gear" and topcad U-joints

Did a paper mock up of the front plate, made the front fender too.

Kind of bring back memories...haha. Thats all for now.

Engine compartment is almost completed.
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 Ypic

I want a relatively flat back for my land rover 88/109 thus I didn't want any post sticking up, therefore I opt for a cantilever setup. The alu shock does nothing except to amplify the bouncing, the problem lies in the hole hidden in the eyelet of the upper shock housing, sealing the hole with some eproxy putty will create a "air tight" shock that will negate the bounce.

I looked into my spares parts stash left over after building the Terra, and found this. Its a rear shock mount for axial Terra.
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 Y2hq

And after a few hours, I came out with this.
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 Krea
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 9odc
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 1ebz
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 Qnh1

I could swap for a shorter shock or angled the shock inwards, but currently the leafs can still maintain its max compression without the shock bottoming out so I think it will work for now (although it not very cosmetically pleasing).

Thanks for reading!

Hi guys, a little update. I have managed to fix up a working roller.

The land rover body is now in the workshop awaiting bending and welding, I have made the mistake of taking measurement from the gmade stock tires as a result the scale is now close to 1:7 but I guess I have not much choice either, a 1:10 scale land rover sII fitted on the extremely long sawback axles with the tires jutting out of the fender  is a big no no (I have no wish to make fenders like honcho or dingo)...moreover the sawback was close to cartoonish 1:7 scale too, so I guess its excusable...

Thanks for reading!

A lil update...

After extending the chassis
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 6b49
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 C5wb

and connected the temporary gearbox
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 Mxny
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 L3fd

I got a working roller, (Please ignore the servo at the front, i am waiting for a micro shift servo, and it will be relocated to another location.)

I have decided to try my hands on a shackle reversal,
The rear in stock form
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 Zlag
The front
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 Jfqy
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 Tl1u
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 W8mf
Flex shots..
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 Aeox
rover - land rover IIa 88/109 Gogr
I made the front mount out of a c channel bracket. Approach angle did suffer, but the caster angle seems alright...
Front travel more or less remain the same, not much difference. More testing is needed I guess.

Thats all for now. Thanks for reading!!! I hope you like it!!!

Wow man, really awesome metal work!

Would be great if you share how you do all this magical work. How do you weld the pieces? How do you get the nice curves in the roof/hood/door etc? How do you cut the delicate window frame?

Thanks for all the comments!!! I drew it in autocad and send them for laser cut. The pieces are then bent by machine and weld together by a local workshop.

Stay tune for my upcoming project!!!
