My one and only Crawler, upgraded and vastly improved !
A motor on axle style rock crawler. Driven by 3 High torque NXT motors giving it more than 16Nm torque. Traxxas MUD tires, 3kg servo, Spektrum receiver, and Futaba DC speed controller.
Specs
Weighs 1.2 kg way lighter than ur usual builts.
Wheel base 12 inch
Length 16 inch
Width 8.4 inch
Height 8.5 inch
Ground clearance 4.6 inch ! much much higher than yours truely !
Wheel diameter 4.3 inch / 110mm / 1.9 tires
Lithium polymer Nanotech 2s 1000mAh
Futaba MC230CR
Front 4 Link joint for extreme articulation
Simple Independent suspension, average articulation but twice the amount of torque !
Front motor on axle with 3kg Servo.
Front and Rear portal axles.
All differential locked it just keeps going. This is actually my 5th or 6th rebuilt with the previous ones being driven by a hobby Brushless motor. However the live axles kept breaking under heavy torque and had to go for direct drive, MOA.
HISTORY of build
Here are the live axle versions of the build powered by a 28mm 905kv brushless motor. Plenty of torque but power loss from live axles and gears made unreliable.
Thanks for viewing !!
With my new found knowledge to control the motors using a hobby speed controller, I wonder how humongous my next build might me (:
Can anyone tell me how I should test my rig so i can maybe follow one of the trials if you guys don't mind an unusual trial truck ?

Re: My one and only Crawler, upgraded and vastly improved !
Well, some specific parts came from 2 lego sets and rest from my older sets. If count by sets = more than 1K, if by parts used then maybe about 200 over w/o receiver, ESC, Servo and tires. All in All I paid only $40 for the Traxxas tires, NTC hobbies just started Traxxas products ! must GO !wyetuck88 wrote:Very nice, one of its kind. How much is the whole set up?
Everything included would be around $400+, but heck price isn't the issue here, I can custom build it very very easily.
Don't play play ~ it can crawl okay ! just isn't water proofTeck wrote:Lego
Lego might be flimsy but with the right design and stuff, plus it's made from high quality ABS plastic, heh heh heh. Comp rig !

$400, icic got to be careful with the technic Lego set, they are prone to cracking after some time, mine did after more then 5 years.

Don't stress it too much can le. Spares are like 10, 20 cents up to 5$ only, haha. most importantly is to keep it light.
@Liew, is there a page to check where the next one is at ?

Re: My one and only Crawler, upgraded and vastly improved !
Will it be advantages for trail or crawl if I could control the 4 motors individually? Any possible scenarios you've came across that might have benefitted from it ? Cuz I'm weighing the benefits with added complexity and weight.
I've already got plans and design rdy for 4 MOA, 1 motor per wheel, which in a way acts like an opened and locked differential at the same time.
Best of both worlds !

welcome on board..
interesting to see a lego crawler....
with 4 MOA, one motor per wheel, first thing that come to my mind is that you can do stationary 360degrees turn...

Thanks, 360° turn might be possible, depends if the terrain allows the tires to slip.

where do you buy the lego spares from? do they sell individual bricks / accessories?

Secret chamber singapore sells individual parts, subjected to availability. They do have quite a lot of them. Gears, axles, beems.. Axles are the cheapest. Sometimes they might have unique parts too.
There are even metal aftermarket parts online too.. Kinda cool.

Yea, the only downside for mine is the top speed. currently it's only around 2 mph.
If I got robot servo motors top speed maybe 10mph. by then i'll probably make the whole thing out of metal.

alright, although it didn't match the rest of the rigs it was still a success. today's run at guilin lake was to test specific parts and build techniques. The next rig will incorporate the good parts leaving out the bad parts.

Good work. Saw your crawler today it's beautiful. I think you have to strengthen the joints, they pop out when the crawler took a fall.

Agree, lego can go only so much. I like the dingo kit however my wallet prefers the Ax10 Ridgecrest.
I mean i can get the Ridge and self mod it till it looks like a scale truck. what do you think ? I asked and none of you guys have the Ridge yet.
Which online store do you guys usually buy from?
