[PHOTOS] LANE Boys RC's Sawback
Good day everyone,
Patrick and I put the final touches on our Sawback last night. Today we went to a local park to take some pictures, below is a small selection. Click on the images for a larger view.
More photos in our Flickr gallery: http://www.flickr.com/photos/78037110@N03/sets/72157640999134924/
The Figure is from the Mattel Barbie series. Being 30cm tall makes it a bit too big (1/6 scale, vs. 1/7 scale of the Sawback), but I like it this way as it matches the cartoon-ish look of the car.
The body was painted with Tamiya Park Green from the inside as usual. After that we applied Tamiya Flat Clear PS55 on the outside. We then put on the stickers and protected them with more coats of Flat Clear.
The decals for the dashboard that come with the Sawback have nothing to do with the original Willys Jeep. So based on photos found on-line we made our own decals. The glove box is a piece of styrene. The instruments and signs on the glove box were printed on ordinary paper, glued on with ordinary white craft glue, and protected with a matt varnish. The hand brake handle was a coffee stirrer.
The light switch was made from a paper clip and a tooth pick.
My plan was to paint the flowers and decorations, like the hippie vans from the 60ies. But we changed to stickers so that Patrick could help with the build
The food and drink decorations were fridge magnets and came from a small local shop, spotted by fellow SG Crawler derrickwthip4. Thanks Derrick!
The seats are covered in a fur-like sticky paper that we got in a craft shop, usually meant for decorating gift containers.
The seat cover material was very easy to get around the sharp bends of the seats as it stretched and stuck well.
Electronics: Feetech FT5513 servo, Hobbyking X-Car 45A brushed ESC. The Tamiya Dirt Tuned 27T motor is a great fit in terms of performance for the stock Sawback gearing.
The Hobbyking ESC is excellent for scale cars. It runs at a high switching frequency of 8 kHz, which means that you can drive extremely slowly and enjoy a lot of low-end torque. The ESC can be switched in crawler mode (no pause going from forward to backward; drag brake in neutral) as well as standard forward/brake/reverse mode.
The only drawback of the ESC is that it is not water proof and that it does not have a LiPo compatible low-voltage cut-off. But for less than USD 10 it is fantastic value for money.
We also cut off the fake engine cover that goes over the ESC area. It serves no purpose and without it we get better access to everything.
Thanks for viewing, see y'all on a trail soon!

Thanks guys!
Actually we got a Ken too. The plan was to put him in the back with a drink in his hand, enjoying the ride. But unfortunately there is just not enough space in the car to accommodate that. So Ken is now somewhere in one of Patrick's toy boxes
